Talk Tuesday with Kristi Trimmer

This is the 12th installment of Talk Tuesday – can you believe I’ve been doing them that long? Did you miss the other ones? Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 5 | Week 6 | Week 7  | Week 8 | Week 9  | Week 10 | Week 11. It amazes me that the Talk Tuesday posts get so much engagement and I love it! I collect the questions people ask me and answer them every Tuesday. Have a question for me about anything? Ask away in the comments below before next Tuesday. I’m always surprised what people end up asking me!

Talk Tuesday

What occupied your time on Fox Island seeing that you were without internet?

There were only 7 guests on the island, and luckily, they were pretty awesome. Jake and Day were from Georgia (live in Texas now) and Steve and Fiona were from England. After lunch I had a culinary experience with the Chef where I learned how to make Salmon Kabobs and then went on a nature hike and learned about the local fauna – loved both activities! I then went on a paddle boat with Jake and Day and had a blast! Jake and Day invited me to eat dinner at their table so I didn’t have to eat alone, which was awesome. Then the five of us went to go check out the sunset on the end of the cove. We saw Orcas playing in the distance and we shared a lot of laughs as we tried to walk on the shell and kept sliding.

After our walk, there was a campfire for us. Just as we were getting settled in, we saw there was a porcupine a few feet in front of the guide (who was freaking out). Honestly, it looked like a dog from so far away. So of course, I grabbed my camera and ran towards it. Who knew a porcupine could climb a tree? He was so stinking cute!!

I crashed shortly after that. Couldn’t sleep really and tossed and turned all night as I have a lot on my mind. I woke up and went on a walk and tried to clear my head. Breakfast was early and next thing I knew the boat was there to take us on a 9-hour cruise to see wildlife and glaciers. Didn’t crack my laptop open at all and sent out one text the entire weekend.

8-31-14 Alaskan Summer

I could live on Fox Island – it is everything I have ever wanted in a place. The ocean out front, a lake in the back and views so stunning they leave you speechless with tears in your eyes.

What do you forecast as your home base for the winter season? Will it be Alaska, Arizona, California, Mexico.. or… And why?

I will be in Alaska for September for sure, and as of right now, for the winter. I have trips though planned for October for 2 weeks in the South and Midwest. January in Arizona, Las Vegas, and San Francisco, and March in Mexico. I know that I need to plan times where I will get out of the cold and where there is a lot of sunlight to survive a winter here.

If I decide to leave, I will be heading East at the end of September as I have obligations on the East Coast next month. Where I will live gives me such extreme stress. It is not an easy decision for me, and I don’t treat it lightly. I need to make a place a home for a little while. Regroup, unpack, breathe. I am a travel blogger, but I am also still a woman who sometimes needs the security of a home.

What is your most memorable moment while in AK? What one particular venture stood out more than the others?

I have had a few honestly, it is hard to choose just one. Seeing Orcas this weekend made me giddy happy. Watching the glaciers fall into the ocean made me incredibly sad and tears flowed down my face without me realizing it (writing a post on this). I hiked back to Portage Glacier a month ago with an amazing man and posted that pic on Facebook. That was the first time I have done that since my divorce four years ago, and it received over 165 Likes – more than ANY other post I have ever made, even those of me crossing any Half Marathon Finish Line. That fact was not lost on me. I was so damn happy that day and it showed all over my face. And before you ask, this relationship has hit the Pause button and I have no answers to all the questions I have received about him.

Seeing animals in the wild are my most treasured moments. Conversations with complete strangers that then become friends warms my heart. Drinking good Alaska craft beer and going to events makes me smile too. Alaska is a wonderful place, truly magical.
