Recipe: Fireweed Coconut Colada

veev coconut colada

I love it when organic spirit companies want me to try out their new cocktails. Kind of awesome, right? I had been checking out the Vita Frute line by Veev for awhile and jumped up and down when I was selected to receive two sample bottles of the Coconut Colada! It is made with real coconut water, VEEV Spirit & organic pineapple juice. I was also stoked to see that it was under 125 calories per serving and 15% ALC/VOL (30 Proof).

Now for me, I like the taste of coconut, but I don’t love it. Since I’m in Alaska, I thought I would Alaskan-it up a bit. Have you ever heard of fireweed? It is a flower that blooms all summer long here. Here is a pic of me picking the blossoms for this Fireweed Simple Syrup recipe that I am making for my original recipe: Veev Fireweed Coconut Colada!

8-10-14 Picking Fireweed

Fireweed Simple Syrup Recipe

1 cup Sugar
1 cup Water
1/2 cup Fireweed blossoms

Simple sugar is equal parts of water and sugar with the fireweed added in for flavoring. Start the sauce pot on a low heat until everything is dissolved and simmering – takes about 20 minutes. You want a slow rolling boil until almost 1/4 of the water is gone. Strain the blossoms out into it is just the Fireweed Simple Syrup which will be a dark pink color.

In a pint glass, fill it up with ice. Pour in 3 oz of Veev Coconut Colada and 1 oz of the Fireweed Simple Sugar. OMG – It is SO tasty!! Add a little bit of fireweed to the top for garnishment and voila – one Alaskan cocktail in your hands! You could also add a tiny umbrella and drink this poolside. Please invite me when you do so.

Want to try growing your very own fireweed? I found some seeds on Amazon. Super cool to find out if they can grow in your area! Here is a $5 off coupon to try out Veev for yourself. Send me pics of you sipping your drink of choice or post them in the comments. I would love to see it blow up with awesome Veev concoctions!!

Disclosure: I have been compensated by receiving two bottles of Veev for free. The idea for the Fireweed Coconut Colada was all mine as was the hard task of trying this drink a few different ways. Links within this post may contain affiliate links that I earn commissions from. An alternative to buy seeds is to transplant a wild fireweed to your yard 🙂

I grabbed a bunch of seed pods to do just that! But not everyone has them readily available. 🙂
