Don’t Hide In Your Mind

Poetry by Kristi Trimmer

When I was younger, I would spend hours every day writing poetry. I wasn’t a fan of poems that rhymed or had strict rules to follow. Typically, I would sit down and write out a piece in 20 minutes then it would take me another hour or two to edit it just right. Twenty-five years later, as I sat looking at a blank screen yesterday afternoon, the same thing happened. I set out to write a status update on Facebook and when I looked down I had written a poem. This is the first poem I have written since I was a teenager. Let me know in the comments what you think – I could really use some feedback on this one!

Don’t Hide in Your Mind

Searching the depths of my soul for the
Answers just out of reach.
Same story, different characters.
Over and over again until lessons are learned.

Inch by inch the stone wall forms
Until only cracks of light filter through
Small crumbles of sand cascade down
As hope claws its way up.

Walking alone
Loving the person inside
Wondering if the path will widen for
Two.

That might not be my storyline.
Letting go of past hurts
Letting go of unfulfilled dreams.
Let go.
Allow new love to grow.

Stand in your truth
Stand up for what’s right
Don’t fall for what’s easy.
Create adventure.
Don’t hide in your mind
Be who you’ve always wanted to be.

I had a long and frustrating day and went to bed around 9pm. I woke up at 11:38pm crying silent tears into my pillow. After years of loving someone, I lovingly let them go in my dreams. I wished him love and light and a lifetime of happiness and walked away. I woke up this morning refreshed, optimistic, and ready to allow a new love into my heart. You see, I couldn’t before as I still held out hope that what once was, would be again. It won’t. We weren’t the right match even though I thought we were.

Don’t hide in your mind…

Kristi Trimmer My blog is about how losing everything made me start living a life filled with travel and adventure. I'm a storyteller... I allow you to see the struggles and triumphs, the tears and smiles, the vulnerability and the chaos. I let you see me.
