Time to Hit the Reset Button on My Life… Here’s Why

Time to Hit the Reset Button on My Life… Here’s Why…

I recently made a difficult decision to put my health first. This should have been easy, shouldn’t I always put my health first? I try to do that, but I don’t always succeed. As most of you know, I am severely allergic to soy and have anaphylactic reactions to it in some cases. No matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to get away from it. Not only is it in food, but also in skincare and hair care products, and don’t even get me started on soy candles. I have gained a lot of weight, my stomach is always upset, and my legs hurt so much each and every day. Instead of traveling to Napa to celebrate Robert Scoble’s birthday at his stellar party, I changed my plane ticket to fly to Indiana and seek help.

Time to Hit the Reset Button on My Life Heres Why

I posted this on Facebook with a heavy heart:

After a lot of soul searching and thought, I’ve decided to head back to Indiana for a month after Vegas. I need more therapy on my leg as I want to run again, to be an athlete again. I’m also doing an intensive 30-Day detox from soy and alcohol. My health needs to be my priority right now as I’m in a pretty unhealthy state. I will have a blog post up tomorrow about it all. I wanted my friends that were expecting me in San Francisco to know that I need to take a health raincheck on what would be a stellar week in Napa.

My Reactions To Soy

1. Throat closes up and I have to take Benadryl or use an Epi Pen. Takes me days, sometimes weeks to recover, often times with trips to the doctor thrown in. Fun times all around.

2. Pretty nasty indigestion where you don’t want to be anywhere near me for up to 24 hours.

3. I gain 1-3 pounds as my cells try to puff themselves up with water to ward off what they view as a virus. I’m currently the second heaviest that I have ever been in my life. Sigh.

But what, that’s not all…

4. Recently, I have been the lucky recipient of hives on my face and one on the tip of my nose that makes me look like Rudolph. Sexy, I know.

5. Follow that up with my face being flush that no amount of makeup can cover up.

6. Finally, my joints and body ache as I am completely inflamed. It feels like I have been hit by a Mack truck.

Why Not Just Stay Away From Soy?

I kinda laugh every time someone says this to me. Unless I am 100% in control of every meal and the air in every room I walk into, it is really hard to do. Even friends and family that cook for me inadvertently add it in. Why? Because they have NO idea how many products have soy in them. I bet you are thinking – why don’t I just eat fruits, vegetables, and fresh meat? Did you know that cows, pigs, chicken, and farmed fish are all fed soy? Yep, I react to them as well. :/ People and businesses burn candles all the time. Most common these days are soy candles – breathing it in is just as bad as consuming it. Instant headaches and bitchiness ensues.

What Am I Going To Do About It?

I’m doing something that is a little radical for me. I’m committing to 30 Day Detox to clean out my gut. That means no soy, no grains, very limited sugar, and no alcohol. I need to start over, I need a baseline to be able to get my body back to somewhat normal. I want to rid my body of all the chemicals that are in it and start over. I am hitting my personal Reset Button.

I’m headed back to Indiana to do that. I bet you are wondering why I can’t I just do that anywhere. I’ve tried and I’ve failed. My cousin Trevor is an Ironman athlete, has children with severe food allergies and already cooks and eats the way I need to, plus he is a sports chiropractor. His sports clinic is where I went to learn to walk again after I tore my Achilles.

I extended my knee running on ice in Alaska just days before I flew to Costa Rica and tore my meniscus. Going back to his clinic for a month is needed for additional therapy on my leg so I can exercise without pain again. So not only am I able to do my 30-Day Detox there, but I am able to get my leg the attention it needs to heal.

My Family Needs Me

Want to know something ironic? My Uncle Tom bought a craft beer bar called Vernon’s Ale House in North Vernon, IN. While I’m there, I will be helping him get the bar on track. I will even be giving beer classes! I will blog about the experience on what it is like to run a craft beer bar. I’m also taking on the challenge of showing you some great mocktails and reviewing nonalcoholic beer and wine. I have written a lot of beer and wine content lately, so those will start to trickle out as well. Not drinking alcohol won’t be easy as I enjoy a glass of wine at the end of the day, but I am committed to trying. Funny, giving up alcohol received the most reactions from people when I posted about it…

I have big plans for 2016 for my blog and for myself. Before I can truly accomplish them, I know I have to get my health on the right track. This is going to be very difficult for me. I’m trying to prepare myself mentally for it. Thank you for supporting me while I head back to Indiana to stay with family and help them with their business needs and get the help I personally need to get healthy again.

    Hi Kristi,
It was so great meeting you at ASW2016–as we played a stellar game of pool! I truly hope to meet again. I can’t even come up with the words for how I am feeling in reaction to your post and current challenge. My hope is that this turns into another amazing life adventure and whirl wind of surprises and goodness! I will lift a glass of kale / spinach smoothie and toast to your health! You have inspired me to make some better decisions for my own life especially in the area of smarter nutritional choices.

    Cheers!
    Kim
